Pigeon Island

Just about a kilometer away in the blue waters of Indian Ocean, the Pigeon Island has magnificent white sandy shores surrounded with many colourful coral reefs and colorful fish including black tip reef sharks making it an amazing place for snorkeling. The island is a nesting ground for thousands of rock pigeons hence it got its name.

Take a boat from the amazing Nilaveli beach to reach this wonderful marine national park. You will have to buy tickets from the Nilaveli beach before boarding to a boat, tickets foreigners vary from 3150 - 4700 LKR for adults and about 950 LKR for children. The island is so small and there are no facilities in there, so be prepared before you leave. Within the island there are snorkeling equipment providers. It is a must go place to enjoy the divine views of the world under water.

There is a relatively easy trail to walk through to the highest point of the island which gives some amazing views, you’d notice sharks floating around from the top. The southern side of the island has excellent views, and best for snorkeling.
If you have the time, visit during a weekday, or the low season to avoid the crowds and enjoy some peaceful time on your own. May to September are the busy months.
