Built in 1933, the Jaffna Public Library was renowned as one of the largest libraries in Asia, with a collection of 97,000 books and manuscripts. However, due to the country’s conflicting past, many of its collections were burnt during the civil war. The rehabilitation of the library was completed in 2001, and even though the old books and manuscripts could not be restored, several new additions were instead obtained by the library. At present, this notable landmark is Sri Lanka’s second main public library and a major tourist destination in Jaffna. The visiting hours are from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm on weekdays, and visitors should remove their shoes before entering the building.
