In the book ‘Romantic Ceylon: It’s History, Legend and Story’, the Englishman Ralph Henry Bassett describes the Dutch fort as a “very strongly fortified two-storied dwelling”. Delft Island Fort, also known as Neduntheevu Fort or Meekanam Fort by the locals, was constructed from limestone and corals by the Portuguese. Subsequently, the Dutch seized the region and established a barrack nearby. Much of the fort has stood the test of time, preserving the charming glory of the colonial era.
