Set in the south-east of Kilinochchi, this massive reservoir is the largest man-made irrigation tank in Northern Sri Lanka, supplied by the Kanakarayan Aru. The construction of Iranamadu tank commenced in July 1902, and was eventually completed in 1921 with a catchment area of 588 km2. The tank was augmented 3 times in 1951, 1954 and 1975 following the completion. At present, Iranamadu tank has become an important source of water supply to people in Kilinochchi for agriculture, fishing and sanitation purposes.
