A forest providing shelter to many colourful birds in Kandy, Udawattekele Sanctuary is an amazing place for walking through the lush forest and bird watching. Within the sanctuary there are eighty bird species including the rare Black-Backed Kingfisher. The mornings are the best to spot birds. Within the sanctuary there are three cave hermitages used by Buddhist monks to meditate, it is interesting to experience what a Buddhist hermit life looks like. During the rainy seasons there can be leeches best to take leech protection anyway.

The main entrance to Udawattekele is about 3 kilometers away from the Temple of the Tooth. The most convenient way to get there is by a tuk tuk. Walks take about 2 to 3 hours.

The gates open from 6:00 AM to 6:00PM, ticket counters close at 4:30PM.
