A horsetail type waterfall with a single drop of 220 meters, Diyaluma is the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is a perfect spot for adventure and hiking. You can reach the top of the waterfall where there is a series of pools at different levels which cascade towards the edge of the cliff, there is one final pool just at the edge of the cliff where the water gets collected before being thrown down.

For adventure lovers it’s best to reach the top of the pool. From Bandarawela you have to drive up to the Makalandeniya Junction through the Poonagala Road and then trek downhill through the grasslands for about 40 minutes to reach the top of the falls. The fall has sections, upper Diyaluma and the Diyaluma falls. Be sure to check both.

The other route through Koslanda and hike up to the falls. It can be done from either Beragala or Wellawaya.

You can reach to the end of the cliff and look below, where you’d see the sheer steep and amazing panoramic views of Koslanda, Wellawaya and the surroundings.

The pools at the top are good for where you can jump from one to another. Be good to take local advice or check the depth of the pools before you jump, and only recommend it if you know what you are doing. You can easily spend hours enjoying and relaxing at the top. If you had a driver you can get him to meet you at Koslanda and climb down to the bottom which takes about another 40 to 50 minutes.

Be extra careful and if you have kids it might be not the place to visit. Take snacks, water, sunglasses, binoculares and a good pair of walking shoes.
