A divine place of tranquility, Pankuliya Asokaramaya is a hidden attraction in the Anuradhapura region. The monastic complex is believed to be built in the 10th century. Within the complex is an amazing 2 meter tall Samadhi Buddha Statue carved out of a dolomite rock. The hollowed eyes of the Buddha statue reveal that once they must have been studded with colourful gems. At the entrance of the Buddha statue is a Pollonnaruwa era moonstone “Sandakada Pahana”. The monastic complex is believed to be used by Buddhist nuns in the past.
