Sigiriya or The Lion Rock is situated 360 meters above sea level. A fortress built by Kasyapa to escape his brothers wrath. The little city is a combination of gardens, pathways and water gardens.
One could check into one of he tourist hotels located within close proximity if you had a couple of days to spent at this historical sight where time seems to stand still. The best time to climb the rock would be during the early hours of the morning, thus avoiding the heat of the afternoon sun. Once at the top of the summit, its easy to imagine a once royal city complete with lush gardens and tranquilizing pools. Descending the Sigiriya Rock is just as breath taking, on close examination one could see what remains of the famous Mirror Wall. Look closely for fading graffiti depicting scenes of ancient beauty too are present. Make time to visit the local museum where terracotta souvenirs could be found, probably beeni n sale for the first visitors over a 1000 years ago.
Words cannot capture splendor this fortress has to offer, the feeling one gets walking within this archeological monument is one to be experienced, to know.
Sigiriya sure is worth a visit! What a mountain! The climb is mostly interesting and once you’re up there, It offers a great view around. Don’t miss it!- Roobert | tripadvisor
